DaisyDisk Alternatives: Free Disk Analyzers We've Actually Tested
DaisyDisk is genuinely beautiful software. The sunburst visualization is iconic, and the scan speed is impressive. It's a solid buy if you don't mind paying for a disk utility.
But many people just want to find one massive file that's killing their storage. Paying for that feels unnecessary when good free options exist.
We've tested every free disk analyzer on macOS. Here's our honest take on each.
The Quick Comparison
| Tool | Visualization | Speed | Price | Our Take |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DissectMac | Treemap | Fast | Free / Pro available | Modern, fast, what we use daily |
| GrandPerspective | Treemap | Moderate | Free (GPL) | Solid but dated interface |
| OmniDiskSweeper | File List | Fast | Free | No visuals, just sorted lists |
| Disk Inventory X | Treemap | Slow | Free | Development appears inactive |
GrandPerspective: The Open-Source Classic
If you've been on Mac for 10+ years, you probably know GrandPerspective. It was the original treemap visualizer, and it's completely free under GPL.
What's good: It works. It's free. The visualization is functional.
Limitations: The interface looks dated. Navigating into folders requires menu clicks rather than fluid interaction. On Apple Silicon Macs, scanning can feel slower than expected.
If open-source licensing matters to you, GrandPerspective is a solid choice.
OmniDiskSweeper: The No-Frills Approach
Made by the OmniGroup (the OmniFocus developers), this tool is as simple as it gets. No visualization—just a column-based file browser sorted by size.
What's good: It's fast. Really fast. And the sorted columns make it easy to drill into folders.
Limitations: Without a visual map, it's harder to get a "feel" for where your space is going. You're looking at lists of numbers.
If you prefer text-based tools over graphical ones, this works well.
Disk Inventory X: The Veteran
This was another pioneer of disk visualization on Mac. It combines a treemap with a file-type breakdown.
What's good: The file-type filtering is useful for finding all videos or all zip files at once.
Limitations: Development has slowed significantly. On recent macOS versions, stability can be inconsistent.
Why We Built DissectMac
We used GrandPerspective for years. But we kept thinking it could be modernized for today's Macs.
We wanted:
- A modern, native macOS interface
- Fast async scanning optimized for Apple Silicon
- Click-to-dive navigation without menu hunting

DissectMac is what we built for ourselves. The core visualization is free—no time limits, no nag screens. There's a Pro version for those who want extra features, but most users won't need it.
Final Verdict
- Use DaisyDisk if: You want polished software and don't mind paying.
- Use GrandPerspective if: Open-source licensing matters to you.
- Use DissectMac if: You want a modern, fast, free tool built for current Macs.
